Adding a New Blog

When you first log in to wp.vcu.edu, a VCU WordPress user account is automatically created for you. Additionally, you will have the option of creating a personal blog and any number of non-personal blogs. At the top of your Dashboard, you will see the widget shown below.

Departmental or Group Blogs

To create a non-personal blog, either for a department or a recognized organization, click the link in the first paragraph that goes to the ‘Create a New Site’ page. There are a few restrictions on blog names, however, and WordPress will not allow you to create a new blog if its name is

  • in the list of keywords at go.vcu.edu,
  • in one of the URLs listed at atoz.vcu.edu, or
  • the eID of another University community member.

If the name you would like to use for a blog matches one of the first two criteria above, use the blog request form to have it be created for you. If it does not match one of the above criteria, follow these steps to create a new blog yourself.

Log in to your WordPress account and click the ‘My Sites’ link under the ‘Dashboard’ menu in the upper left. Then click the ‘Create a New Site’ link on the ‘My Sites’ page.

Fill out the form with your desired blog name, which may contain only numbers and lowercase letters (e.g., mynewblog). The blog title is less restricted and should describe your blog (e.g., My New Blog). Check whether you want your new blog to be visible to search engines, and then click ‘Create Site’.

Your new blog has been created and will now appear in your list of sites. If you would like your non-personal blog to appear in VCU’s A–Z Web Directory, make sure it complies with VCU’s web standards and submit the link for review at atoz.vcu.edu/manage/edit.

Personal Blog

If you would like to create and maintain a personal blog at wp.vcu.edu, you simply have to click the button in the dashboard widget shown above that reads, ‘Create my Personal VCU Blog’. If you have already created a non-personal blog or have been assigned to one already, the widget will appear in the upper right of your Dashboard and will resemble the following image.

Just click the button, and a personal blog will be created for you. You will automatically be redirected to the Dashboard for your new personal blog.
