Math Type Overview

MathType is the professional version of the Equation Editor in Microsoft Word or Corel Word Perfect. It allows you to create complex equations with a simple point and click. MathType works with any word processor, presentation program (such as Powerpoint), Blackboard, page layout programs, HTML-authorizing tool and other software, to create equations for research papers, class material, web pages, slide presentations, dissertations and journal articles.

So what's the story with MathType and Microsoft Office 2008?

Licensing Information

 VCU has obtained a MathType site license which permits both on campus and home use by current VCU faculty, staff and students.  In addition, five (5) concurrent use licenses of MathType available for use by VCU reseachers on the App2Go Server.

MathType software obtained under this license:

• May only be used by current VCU faculty, staff and students
• May be used for campus and home use.
• Is exclusively for academic use
• May not be used for commercial gain
• May not be modified
• May only be shared with others at VCU who register a license
• Must be uninstalled when you are no longer affiliated with VCU

Use MathType on the App2Go Server

Using a Windows, Mac or Linux computer, you are able to access MathType via a browser window.  Although MathType runs on the App2Go Server, it appears to be running on your PC.  You can open, save and print files from your PC.  Applications on the App2Go server are available to support research projects and are not intended for instructional use.

Current VCU faculty, staff and students may request an App2Go account to access MathType on the App2Go Server for research.  Documentation on how to use of the App2Go Server will provide you details such as system requirements, installation, opening files, saving files and printing.

VCU faculty, staff and students who are subscribed to the MATHTYPE-L LISTSERV
(mailing list) receive notifications of Mathtype upgrades, etc.

Those who registered their license on the VCU Software Download Registration webpage are automatically added to this list. In some departments technical support staff register a block of licenses. If users whose licenses are registered by their technical support staff wish to receive listserv notifications for this product they should subscribe:
