Sudaan Overview

Sudaan is a statistical package for the analysis of data from complex studies. SUDAAN offers computationally efficient and design-corrected analyses of:

• Data from complex sample surveys
• Epidemiological study data
• Clinical trial data
• Experiments or observational studies
• Longitudinal Data

SUDAAN provides estimates that correctly account for complex design features of your study, including:

• Unequally weighted or unweighted data
• Stratification
• With or without replacement designs
• Multistage and cluster designs
• Repeated measures
• General cluster-correlation
• Multiply imputed analysis variables

Sudaan is commonly used to analyze data from such NCHS studies as the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) and many more.  Sudaan is available for Windows workstations in two formats:

• Sudaan Release 10 SAS-Callable Version for SAS Version 9 (a set of statistical procedures that must be called from within SAS V9.x)
• Sudaan Release 10 StandAlone Version (Sudaan program which is launched from Windows which can be used to read SPSS datasets or SAS transport files).

Sudaan Licensing Information

• One (1) copy of Sudaan Stand Alone Version is available free of charge on the App2Go Server for VCU faculty, staff and students.
• VCU Technology Services has arranged with RTI International to provide SUDAAN to current VCU faculty, staff or students doing FUNDED research for $210/yr, a significant discount over academic list price ($960 first year and $460/yr maintenance). Sudaan obtained under this license may only be used by VCU faculty, staff or students doing funded research for teaching and research purposes as long as they are affiliated with the University. Sudaan is available for Windows workstations in two formats: SAS-Callable and StandAlone.  Each format is licensed and sold as a separate license.
• Student Licenses:  Discounted student licenses can be purchased directly from RTI.
  Cost is $135 for a 2 year student license.

Purchase Sudaan for faculty staff and students doing funded research

VCU faculty,VCU research staff and VCU students doing FUNDED research:

Obtain a new Sudaan license is $210 per copy for the first year. The first year charge is payable at the time of the installation. Thereafter, payment is due annually on the University’s renewal date (in February). Existing licenses may be renewed for 2009 at $210 per copy. The cost per PC may change at the time when the contract is renewed. Payment must be made by University Budget Code. No checks, credit cards or cash will be accepted. Purchase for faculty, staff and students doing funded research. 

Complete a Sudaan License Agreement Form. Your fiscal officer should fill in the correct Budget Code to be debited and should also have signed the application form. When your license registration has been processed, you will receive email to your VCU email account with download and installation instructions.   Completed license forms can be submitted by:

Purchase Sudaan for students

 Discounted student licenses can be purchased directly from RTI. Cost is $135 for a 2 year student license.

Renewing Sudaan Licenses:

1. To renew SUDAAN for VCU faculty, research staff and students doing FUNDED research:
   Please submit a completed Sudaan License Agreement Form, including budget code authorization for $210/license. After the license is renewed, the license string will be e-mailed to you which will enable SUDAAN to continue functioning.
2. Completed license forms can be submitted by:

Use Sudaan on the App2Go Server

Using a Windows, Mac or Linux computer, you are able to access Sudaan via a browser window. Although Sudaan runs on the App2Go Server, it appears to be running on your PC. You can open, save and print files from your PC. Applications on the App2Go server are available to support research projects and are not intended for instructional use.   There is one (1) Standalone Sudaan license on the App2Go server.

Only current VCU faculty, staff and students may request an App2Go account to access Sudaan on the App2Go Server. Documentation on how to use of the App2Go Server will provide you details such as system requirements, installation, opening files, saving files and printing.
