Software Description: Thunderbird is an open source email client offered by Mozilla.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.7 Downoad Instructions

To ensure that you are using the latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird, please visit the Mozilla Website.

Locate your mailfile:

Click here and enter the appropriate information to return your mail server information:

1.   From the Thunderbird menu bar, select Tools, Account Settings

Click Add Account

2.   Select E-mail account click Next

3.   Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From field, i.e. Wally World.

Enter your e-mail address. This is your eID + @vcu.edu Do not use an explicit server address.

Click Next

4.   Select the IMAP option for Server Configuration

Incoming server: yourmailserver.vcu.edu (as found when you located your mailfile, i.e. aspen.vcu.edu, oak2.vcu.edu)

Outgoing mail server: cedar.vcu.edu

Click Next.

5.   Your Incoming User Name is your eID.

Click Next

6.   Your name (this is your choice, see examples or use the default which is your e-mail address)

Click Next

7. Click Finish to complete the initial setup.

8.   Select Server Settings under your newly created account

Server Name: yourmailserver.vcu.edu

Port: 993

Check the Use secure connection (SSL) box.

9.   Select Outgoing Server Settings (SMTP)
Outgoing server name is cedar.vcu.edu
Port: 465
Check Use name and password
User Name: Your eID
Use secure connection: SSL
OK.

10. Click Inbox

NOTE: The IMAP password is the same as your VCU Mail Anywhere Password or your eID password!

As a security measure, it is recommended not to check the Remember password option unless you are the sole user of your computer.


11. On first access, you will receive a prompt to accept the SSL certificate.
Select Accept this certificate permanently.
Click OK.

12.   Subscribing to folders
Right click on account name and select Subscribe

13.   This dialog box gives you the opportunity to select which of your Notes folders you wish to see in Thunderbird. In most cases, you will wish to see all of your folders.

Select (single-click) the box next to each folder and click OK


***In case of server failure or outage we recommend you configure a second account with the incoming server being your backup server.

Example: If your incoming server is aspen2.vcu.edu you would create a second account using oak2.vcu.edu for failover. Use the same above

directions substituting oak2.vcu.edu for aspen2.vcu.edu.
