How to Uninstall Virus Protection Software

Note: Please be sure to run a full scan of your hard drive immediately after you have removed your current anti-virus software and successfully installed the Symantec Anti-Virus software downloaded from this site. During the brief period in which you are removing your anti-virus software, your machine is vulnerable and could be infected. Running a Live Update and then a full scan of your hard drive immediately after installing the new anti-virus software ensures that your computer does not have a virus.

If the anti-virus program has an uninstall program, you should run that first. After the uninstall has completed, you should follow the steps listed below to ensure that all program components have been removed. You will also need to reboot your machine to complete the uninstall process.

  • Go to Start…. Settings…. Control Panel.
  • Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  • Find the virus protection program in the list of software installed on the computer.
  • Click the Add/Remove button.
Be sure to remove all anti-virus program components, which may appear with names that are not obviously associated with the program (e.g., when removing an unwanted version of Norton Anti-virus software, you may need to remove LiveReg and Live Update).
  • Follow steps to remove the program.
  • After uninstalling your anti-virus software, you need to reboot your computer
