Further Information

How the Symantec Managed Client Works

Once the managed client is installed on your machine, computers on the VCU network will receive automatic downloads of new anti-virus signature files each week or sooner if Symantec has critical updates that need to be downloaded to your machine.

It is recommended that you check your virus definition dates once a week to be sure that your machine is in fact getting the most current updates. To check your definition date follow the procedures described below.

How to Check on Your Virus Definition Files

You can check on your virus definition dates by double clicking on the yellow shield icon that is in your task tray in the lower right hand corner of your Windows desktop. The Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition program window will open, and you will see the Virus Definition File box with a date listed next to Version. If this date is older than one week, you should click on the Live Update button while connected to the Internet in order to download the latest virus definition files. After the download is complete, the date of the virus definition file will be updated when you click on the yellow shield icon again.

Special Installation Instructions for Windows 98 and Windows ME Users

When Windows 98 and Windows ME users attempt to install the Symantec Anti-Virus Client, a system warning dialog box may appear. This dialog box warns that a root certificate must be installed and that you need to visit the Window Update web site for more information. Please go to the following link for instructions on handling this situation:

Warning for Dial-Up Users

Dial-up users must maintain their own virus definitions. To stay up-to-date with your virus definitions, you will need to manually do a LiveUpdate at least once a week. See the procedure described above for checking virus definition files.

Uninstall Current Virus Protection Software

Before installing a new version of SAVCE, you need to uninstall any virus protection software currently on your machine including an older version of Symantec Anti-Virus software. Click here for help on how to uninstall virus protection software.
