Upload and View Your People Web Pages
Uploading your Web pages to www.people.vcu.edu
To upload Web pages that you create on your Macintosh or a PC to the People Web server, use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. While working on-campus you may use Fetch (Mac) or Filezilla FTP (PC) to transfer your files. While working off-campus you may use Fetch (Mac), Filezilla or SSH (PC) to transfer your files.
Using FrontPage to Upload
Effective September 2007, Technology Services will no longer enable Frontpage Extensions for new accounts. We will be eliminating all Frontpage Extensions support for existing accounts on the people server no later than June 2008. You may still use Frontpage to create and maintain your site, however you will have to store it locally on your computer and upload it via FTP using software such as Filezilla. You will also not be able to use Frontpage Web Bots to automatically update certain parts of your page (such as last updated date).
You may use Microsoft's FrontPage to create, manage, and upload your Web pages. To use FrontPage, you must first contact one of the Web Server Administrators (John Sullivan) to have your account FrontPage enabled. To upload files to your people account in FrontPage, you can simply copy and paste the file from your desktop into the folder on the server.
Using Dreamweaver to Upload
You may use Macromedia Dreamweaver to create, manage, and upload your Web pages. You must enter the FTP Host (www.people.vcu.edu) and the Host Directory (public_html/) in the FTP section of the Remote Info section of the Edit option. This allows you to "Get Files" and "Put Files" on the sever.
Using Filezilla
Please visit the FTP Tutorial for more information on how to use the FTP Program.
Setting Permissions on your Documents
Your "home page" (the initial entry point to your Web site) should be named "index.html" to keep people from looking at all documents in your Web directory without following your specific links.
NOTE: If you used an UNIX editor (such
as jove or vi) to create your Web pages then you must enter the
command
chmod 644 [filename]
before you or anyone else can view it using the Web server.
If you created your Web pages on your Mac or PC and used one of the above FTP programs, FrontPage, or Dreamweaver, then your file permissions will automatically be set properly.
Viewing your Web Site
The URL address for your Web pages is http://www.people.vcu.edu/~[userid]/[filename] where "[userid]" is your login id on the system and 'index.html' is the actual name of the file (do not include the brackets "[ ]" in your actual address). Remember, in order for browsers to process HTML documents properly, the "filename" must end in ".html" (or .htm). If no filename is included then the browser looks for a file named index.html.
Publishing your Home Page
Once you have completed your Web site and you are satisfied with its appearance, you can submit your URL to be included in the VCU Faculty and Staff Homepage Directory.
