In this takeout, we will use brackets "<>" to indicate keys to be pressed. Thus, the instruction press <m> means to press the letter "m" key.

If you have problems with or questions about the contents of this takeout, you may call the UCS-AC Help Line at 828-2227 or the UCS-MCV Help Line at 828-9843 during normal business hours.

This takeout describes using the dial-in facilities for Virginia Commonwealth University.

1 VCU DIAL-IN FACILITY

The VCU dial-in facility provides terminal connectivity to a number of host machines located at the University. Access to these host machines are for authorized users only. Users requiring Web-based Internet access can purchase this service through online@vcu, located on both campuses at the University Student Commons or the MCV Campus Bookstore.

1.1 Initial Setup

Before dialing in, set your modem and/or communications program as follows:

  • Set the baud rate to the highest rate that your modem supports (e.g., 2400, 9600, 14400, 28800).
  • No parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.
  • Full duplex.
  • Set terminal emulation to vt100.
1.2 Dial-In Procedure

The telephone number for connecting to VCU is 649-0979. Dial the number according to the instructions for your communications program and/or modem. Allow up to 30 seconds for the phone connection to be established.

Once connected,  press <Enter> once and a menu of available systems will be displayed followed by a prompt

Selection:

At the prompt, enter the number corresponding to the desired host. You should then see a "login:" prompt. Login to your account as usual.

When finished with your session, logout as usual. The menu will again be displayed. Either select another system for connection or select the number corresponding to "EXIT" to disconnect the phone line. NOTE: IF THERE IS NO ACTIVITY FOR 30 MINUTES YOUR SESSION WILL BE TERMINATED.

1.3 Uploading and Downloading Files on a UNIX host

WS_FTP is the recommended method for transferring files to or from all Unix hosts. For more information please see the File Transfer section of the University Computing Services FAQs.  Note that when uploading a file into your account, the name you give the new file may contain letters, digits, periods, and underscores (but should not contain blank spaces)."

1.4 Key Mapping for Connection to VCUMVS (IBM Mainframe)

The AS5300 terminal server that is used for dial up access will allow more than one definition for a key function. Several definitions have been defined for some of the key functions and are listed below as options. The ^ has been used to indicate the control (Ctrl) key except in the case of PF18 where the actual key is used. The \E has been used to indicate the escape (Esc) key.
