SAS OnlineTutor
VCU has a site license for SAS OnlineTutor software from SAS Institute, Inc. SAS OnlineTutor obtained under this license may only be used by current VCU faculty, staff, and students on their office, laptops, or home computers.
What is SAS OnlineTutor?
SAS OnlineTutor is a set of tutorials for learning to program in SAS 9.1 or higher, SAS 8 or Enterprise Guide:

Advanced SAS
Note: SAS discontinued development of SAS OnlineTutor with the 9.1 version. Instruction covered in this tutorial also apply to SAS 9.2.

When you launch a SAS tutorial:
- Select the "Reset your SAS version" button to select the version of SAS you are working in.
- Be sure to Select "Before You Begin" to setup your environment and to access the exercise files.
How do I download SAS OnlineTutor?
A CD image file which contains both SAS OnlineTutor programs can be downloaded free from the VCU software downloads site. After downloading, this CD image file can then be used to create one installation CD. You will need one blank CD-R or CD-RW disk to create the SAS OnlineTutor installation CD from the downloaded image file. The PC used for download must:
- Have a CD burner
- Have software installed for burning CDs
If you do not have a PC with CD burning capability, you may use the facilities in the computer lab in Cabell Library, Room B-8 (Monroe Park Campus) or Sanger Hall, Room B1-018 (MCV campus).
An active VCU e-mail account is required to download SAS OnlineTutor installation files.
To download the SAS 9.1 OnlineTutor CD image file:
- Select the Download SAS OnlineTutor link below.
- Follow the directions to enter your license registration information
- When the list of software products is displayed, select SAS OnlineTutor
- Specify the
number of licenses you will be using
(i.e., the number of PCs on which you will be installing SAS OnlineTutor using this single download). - Select the RegisterSoftware button.
- On the subsequent page, after reading the instructions, select the link at the bottom to download the image file SAS913_Tutor.ISO to your PC desktop
- Through the campus network the download of each CD image may take several minutes to complete. Off campus download time is dependent upon your Internet connection speed.
- After the download,
double click on the downloaded disk image file called:
SAS913_Tutor.ISO
This should launch your CD burning software - Follow the directions presented by the software for specifying the Desktop as the location of the image file, selecting the recording speed, etc., and for starting the CD burning process. The software will then extract the files from the image file and burn them onto the CD.
- Label this CD "SAS 9.1.3 OnlineTutor Disk".
- Use this to install the SAS Online Tutor software on your PC.
- Insert SAS Online Tutor CD into your CD drive. (Setup will not run automatically)
- To install the
Basic/Intermediate Online Tutor:
- Open
the sas_tutor_basic folder on the SAS Online Tutor CD.
(Using My Computer or Windows Explorer) - Double-click on the setup.exe file.
- Select English as the language you want to install.
- A window will come up with the Online Tutor overview and installation instructions.
- Scroll down
to the Installation header.
The first row in the table should be the SAS Online Tutor: Basic and Intermediate SAS 1.2 for Windows. - Read the Installation Instructions by clicking on the Installation Instructions link.
- Select the Install link in the Windows row. This will open the InstallShield Wizard.
- Follow the InstallShield Wizard to complete your installation.
- Open
the sas_tutor_basic folder on the SAS Online Tutor CD.
- To install the
Advanced Tutor:
- open the sas_tutor_advanced folder on your SAS Online Tutor CD.
- Double-click on the setup.exe file and repeat the steps above.
Registering Additional SAS OnlineTutor Licenses:
Each installation of this software MUST be registered. When SAS OnlineTutor is obtained by download you are asked to specify the number of licenses. If additional licenses will be installed at a later time, the licenses MUST be registered online. Please use the VCU Software Download Registration webpage to register additional licenses even though you do not perform an additional download.
Restrictions:
- SAS OnlineTutor obtained under this license may only be used by current VCU faculty, staff, and students on their office, laptops, or home computers.
- When you leave VCU, you MUST remove all VCU licensed SAS products from your office, laptop and home PC.
- You may not resell this license or software.
- Any commercial or profit-making use of this software is strictly prohibited.
- You may not reverse assemble, reverse engineer or decompile the Software or otherwise attempt to access the source code.
- When SAS OnlineTutor is obtained by download or purchase from online@vcu you are asked to specify the number of licenses. If additional licenses are installed at a later time, these additional licenses MUST be registered online. Please use the VCU Software Download Registration webpage to register additional licenses even though you do not perform an additional download.
