IF YOU DOWNLOADED SPSS...
If you downloaded SPSS from the VCU software download website, you have downloaded a so-called "image file" onto your PC (also known as an "ISO image file").
This single image file contains the various files needed to install the SPSS program. These files have to be extracted from the image file and burned (written) onto a blank CD. That process will create an SPSS installation CD.
To be able to do this:
- The PC where you downloaded the image file must have a CD drive that can burn CDs.
- The PC must have separate software installed (such as Roxio Easy CD Creator) that can extract the files from the image file and burn those files onto the CD.
Important: The Windows built-in CD burning capability is not sufficient for this purpose. For example, in Windows you cannot simply right-click on the image file and select "Record to CD". This will only copy the single image file to the CD, as is. You must have a CD burning program that can extract the files that are contained within the image file and copy those files to the CD.
If your PC does not meet the above requirements, you may use the PCs in the Cabell B-8 and Sanger B3-012 labs.
Download the image file from the VCU software download website and save it on your PC.
Insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW into your CD drive.
Double-click on the icon for the downloaded file. This should launch your CD burning software.
If your CD software does not launch: If you double-click and your CD burning software does not launch, you will have to launch it manually. If your CD burner program is Roxio Easy CD Creator, launch this program from the Windows Start menu. Then pull down the File menu and select Record CD from CD Image. If you have a different CD burner program, it should have a similar facility for handling image files.
Follow the directions presented by the CD software for specifying the location of the image file, selecting the recording speed, etc., and for starting the CD burning process. The software will then extract the files from the image file and burn them onto the CD.
After CD burning process has finished, exit the CD software program.
In Windows, display the contents of the newly created CD. You should see SEVERAL files and folders on the CD.
Remove the CD from the CD drive and label it "SPSS 15.0 for Windows."
You now may use this CD for installing SPSS 15, as described in the next section.
(If you have not already done so, you may have to remove the CD from the CD drive and then re-insert it in order to begin the installation process.)
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS VISTA
Installing SPSS 15 on a Windows Vista computer requires that you apply a special SPSS "hotfix" in between the installation and the licensing procedures. Here is a summary of the steps for installing SPSS 15 and applying the latest available patches -- they must be performed in the order listed below :
- Install (but do NOT license) SPSS 15, according to the instructions in the Installation section below. At the end of the installation, select "Get a License Now" and click "OK". Then, choose "Quit" on the License Authorization Wizard panel, and click "Yes" when asked "Are you sure you want to exit License Authorization Wizard".
- Obtain and install the SPSS 15 Vista Hotfix. You may obtain this hotfix and its SPECIAL installation instructions directly from SPSS, Inc. Visit SPSS Technical Support and select the link Login to Online Tech Support. When prompted for a username and password, type guest (for each) and press Enter. Then select the Patches link, then select SPSS for Windows, then select SPSS 15 Vista HOTFIX - Description, Installation Instructions, and Download.
- License your copy of SPSS 15, according to the instructions in the
License Authorization Wizard section below.

Then open the folder that contains the patch file and double click its icon to launch the patch installation process. Follow the directions presented on the screens that appear.
Note: If you purchased or downloaded SPSS 15 after July 16, 2007, your installation CD will install SPSS 15.0.1. That is, after you install SPSS 15, you will have Patch 15.0.1 already installed.
- Obtain and install SPSS Patch 15.0.1.1. To obtain the patch, please see Obtaining SPSS Patches/Hotfixes. To apply the patch, close ALL Windows applications that you might have open (including SPSS). Then open the folder that contains the patch file and double click its icon to launch the patch installation process. Follow the directions presented on the screens that appear.
Note: Patch 15.0.1.1 fixes a known data problem (that was introduced by Patch 15.0.1). It is important that you install this patch.
BEFORE INSTALLATION
Before beginning the installation, exit/close all Windows applications. In particular, be sure to stop or temporarily disable all virus checking software. Of course, be sure to re-enable the virus software after the installation.
INSTALLATION
Insert the SPSS 15.0 for Windows CD-ROM into you computer's CD-ROM drive. After several seconds, the SPSS 15.0 for Windows screen will be displayed:

Note: If the above screen does not appear, click the Windows Start button, click Run, and in the dialog box that appears type the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive followed a colon and the word setup, and then click OK. For example, if your CD-ROM drive letter is D, you would type d:setupand click the OK button. After a brief pause, the installation screen should appear.
Several choices are listed in the above screen. We will discuss below the two choices in which most users will be interested: Installation Instructions and Install SPSS.
Before beginning the actual installation, you may want to read or print additional information about installing SPSS, and other related information. To do so:
- Select the Installation Instructions choice from the SPSS 15.0 for Windows screen.
- A list of folders and files will be displayed. Open the folder entitled:
SPSS
- Then open the file entitled:
Site License Installation Instructions.pdf
- Opening this file requires that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader 3 or later on your computer. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you can obtain it from this Adobe Acrobat Reader web page.
To install SPSS, select the Install SPSS choice from the above SPSS 15.0 for Windows screen.
After a short pause, during which some intermediate screens will briefly appear, the screen shown below will be displayed.

Click Next.
In the next screen, select Site License, as shown below:

Click Next.
The License Agreement screen will appear:

In order to continue the installation, you must accept the terms displayed in this screen. If you agree to these terms, select I accept the terms… and click Next.
The next screen will display information about SPSS 15, as shown below:

Read this information, as desired. This information is also available directly on the installation CD in a file named readme.doc.
Click Next.
On the following screen, type your name, institution, and the SPSS serial number for this license:

Above, we have left the serial number box blank to prevent unauthorized access. The serial number should have been sent to your VCU e-mail account when you downloaded SPSS 15 or purchased it from Online@VCU. If you purchased your installation media, the serial number can also be found on your CD-ROM case or sleeve.
Then click Next.
The next screen will give you the opportunity to change the folder in which SPSS 15.0 will be installed. The usual location (C:\Program Files\SPSS\) is selected by default:

If you have an earlier version of SPSS installed and you want to replace that with SPSS 15.0, you do not need to uninstall the older version. Just install SPSS 15.0 in the same folder as the older version.
If you have earlier versions of SPSS installed and you want to leave those earlier versions in place, then you will need to instruct SPSS to install SPSS 15.0 in a different folder.
To change the installation folder, click the Change button and follow the directions presented to select a folder for SPSS 15.0.
After making your desired folder selection (if necessary), click Next to continue.
The next screen will allow you to begin the installation:

Click Install to start the installation process. The following screen will appear:

The installation process may take several minutes to complete.
When the installation has completed, the following screen will appear:

In the above screen, make sure the checkbox for Get a license now is checked , so that you can obtain a license for the software (otherwise, the software will only run for a two week period).
Then click OK.
The screen for the License Authorization Wizard will appear:

At this point, please follow the licensing instructions in the LICENSING SPSS section below, UNLESS you are installing SPSS 15 on a Windows Vista computer.
Windows Vista users: If you are installing SPSS 15 on a Windows Vista computer, at this point you need to quit the installation procedure (without yet licensing SPSS) and install a special SPSS Vista Hotfix. Click the "Quit" button in the above screen, and click "Yes" when asked "Are you sure you want to exit License Authorization Wizard". Then follow steps 2-5 listed in the Special Instructions for Windows Vista section (found earlier in this document) to install this hotfix and to then complete the installation and licensing process.
