Installation Instructions for SPSS 14.0
If you downloaded SPSS from the VCU software download website, you have downloaded a so-called "image file" onto your PC (also known as an "ISO image file").
This image file contains the various files needed to install the SPSS program. These files have to be extracted from the image file and burned (written) onto a blank CD. This process will create an SPSS installation CD.
To be able to do this:
- The PC where you downloaded the image file must have a CD drive that can burn CDs.
- The PC must have separate software installed (such as Roxio Easy CD Creator) that can extract the files from the image file and burn those files onto the CD.
IMPORTANT: The Windows built-in CD burning capability is not sufficient for this purpose. For example, in Windows you cannot simply right-click on the image file and select "Record to CD". This will only copy the image file to the CD, as is. You must have a CD burning program that can extract the files that are contained within the image file and copy those to the CD.
If your PC does not meet the above requirements, you may use the PCs in the Cabell B-8 and Sanger B3-012 labs.
Download the image file from the VCU software download website and save it on your PC.
Insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW into your CD drive.
Double-click on the icon for the downloaded file. This should launch your CD burning software.
If your CD software does not launch: If you double-click and your CD burning software does not launch, you will have to launch it manually. If your CD burner program is Roxio Easy CD Creator, launch this program from the Windows Start menu. Then pull down the File menu and select Record CD from CD Image. If you have a different CD burner program, it should have a similar facility for handling image files.
Follow the directions presented by the CD software for specifying the location of the image file, selecting the recording speed, etc., and for starting the CD burning process. The software will then extract the files from the image file and burn them onto the CD.
After CD burning process has finished, exit the CD software program.
In Windows, display the contents of the CD. You should see SEVERAL files and folders on the CD.
Remove the CD from the CD drive and label it "SPSS 14.0 for Windows."
You now may use this CD for installing SPSS 14, as described in the next section.
(If you have not already done so, you may have to remove the CD from the CD drive and then re-insert it in order to begin the installation process.)
Before beginning the installation, exit/close all Windows applications. In particular, be sure to stop or temporarily disable all virus checking software.
Of course, be sure to re-enable the virus software after the installation. (To disable or to re-enable Norton/Symantec AntiVirus, right-click on its icon in the system tray in the lower right portion of the Windows screen. From the pop-up menu that appears, click Enable File System Realtime Protection so that it is either selected or unselected, as appropriate.)
Insert the SPSS 14.0 for Windows CD-ROM into you computer's CD-ROM drive. After several seconds, the SPSS 14.0 for Windows screen will be displayed:

Note: If it does not appear, click the Windows Start button, click Run, and in the dialog box that appears type the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive followed a colon and the word setup, and then click OK. For example, if your CD-ROM drive letter is D, you would type d:setupand click the OK button. After a brief pause, the installation screen should appear.
Several choices are listed in the above screen. We will discuss below the two choices in which most users will be interested: Installation Instructions and Install SPSS.
Before beginning the actual installation, you may want to read or print additional information about installing SPSS, and other related information. To do so, select the Installation Instructions choice from the SPSS 14.0 for Windows screen.
A list of folders and files will be displayed. Open the
folder entitled:
SPSS
Then open the
file entitled:

computer. (If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you can easily install it
by selecting Install Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 in the SPSS 14.0 for
Windows screen and following the directions presented. Or, you can obtain it
from this
