To Install PC SAS Version 8.2 for Windows 95/98/2000/XP/NT Workstations

Note: If upgrading from SAS 8.0 or SAS 8.1:  SAS Institute recommends uninstalling SAS 8.0 or SAS 8.1 prior to installing SAS 8.2.

Note: The installation of PC SAS Version 8.2 (TS2MO) may take up to several hours, depending on the components that must be installed. The Systems Requirements Wizard on the Setup Disk will install them but the installation may require several reboots.

Note: Patches called 'Hotfixes' also need to be applied after installing.

These are summary instructions for installing PC SAS for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional or Windows NT Workstations. Complete installation instructions for NT Server and for ALL SAS Products are available on the SAS website.

Before installing PC SAS V8.2, make sure your PC is ready.

1) Check the system requirements on the SAS web site, for SAS Version 8.2 (TS2MO) for Windows.
       For easier reading, use the pdf version.

2) Previous versions of SAS that MUST be uninstalled: 
      Version 8.1, Version 8.0, Version 8 Developer's Release, Version 7 

           a)  To uninstall software, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
           b)  Then double-click Add/Remove Programs.  
                      Find the version of SAS, click on it, then select OK.
           c)  Using My Computer or Explorer, locate the SAS installation folder:
                      C:\|ProgramFiles\SAS Institute\SAS\V8.
                      Delete any remaining folders and files in this folder. 

       Note:  SAS 6.12 does NOT have to be removed to install SAS 8.2
                  since they install into different directory structures.

  3)  The correct versions of Windows components and Internet Explorer 5  
       MUST be installed on your PC.  To verify that your system contains 
       these and to install the required components:
           a)  Start Windows. Close all other Windows applications.
           b)  Insert the SAS 8.2 "Setup Disk" into your CD drive.
                     "The SAS System Product Installation " screen should appear.

c)  Select the "System Requirements Wizard" and follow the
                     instructions on the screen.  Depending on the components
                     installed,  multiple reboots may be required.     

If the above window does not start automatically:
       a)  Select Start and then Run...
       b)  To start the Setup program type in the Run window:
                 <source_drive>: \Setup.exe
       c)   Example:  If your CD drive is D: then type:
                           D:\Setup.exe  

4) Sufficient disk space (353 MB) must be available to complete the install.

Hard Drive Properties

a) To check the available disk space on your PC, click on My
     Computer, then right click the C: drive and select Properties.
      b)  Look at the Free space.  In the example below, there is
      enough space.  5.06GB are available and the VCU recommended install of SAS needs 353MB.

5.)  Close ALL applications INCLUDING Virus programs (such as Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect) that are running in background.

PC SAS V8.2 Installation

  1. Start Windows. Close all other Windows applications.
  2. If needed, re-insert CD labeled "The SAS System Release 8.2 Setup Disk " into the CD drive. The SAS System Product Installation screen should appear.
  3. Select "SAS System Setup" to begin the SAS installation.
  4. Read the Welcome screen and press the Next button.
  5. IF you are installing with installation CDs that the license period has expired, you will see the following screen:

Authorization Location

a) Go to http://www.at.vcu.edu/sas/sas_soft.html#SETINIT and
    read the information about SAS license renewals.
b) Select the link To renew SAS for Windows 8.2 for Teaching and Research.  
c) Download the SAS 8.2 setinit file, noting the loacation and calling it setinit.sss.  
d) In the Authorization Location window (pictured above), select the Browse... button.
e) In the Choose Folder window, specify the path to the directory where the
    downloaded setinit.sss was saved.
f) Select the OK button.
g) In the Authorization Location window, select the Next> button.

6)    Because the entire SAS installation is very large (930 MB),
       at the Select Setup Type window, it is recommended that you
       select Custom.  Press the Next button.

7 )  The next several screens that appear allow you to specify where
      to place the files necessary to run SAS.   
      Usually the default locations are used.

8 ) Because the entire SAS installation is very large (930 MB), 
    in the Solutions window:

Solutions

          a)  Uncheck ENTERPRISE MINER SERVER SQL (unless you intend to use it for data mining).
          b)  Check ACADEMIC COMPUTING OFFER.
          c)  Select the Customize button.
          d)  When the Custom Installation window appears, select the components to be installed:

Custom Installation

The following components are recommended (353 MB space needed):

Base SAS Software 510 K (required)
Core of the SAS System 151744 K (required)
SAS OnLine Tutor 57578 K
SAS/Access Interface to PC File Formats 1256 K
SAS/CONNECT Software 2096 K
SAS/FSP (required for Enterprise Reporter) 502 K
SAS/GRAPH Software 29368 K
SAS/STAT Software 29601 K
SAS/Integration Technologies 8727K

Please Note:
      a)  If the PC has insufficient disk space for the installation, either:
           * Delete some files from the hard disk OR
           * Select fewer modules, but "Base" and "Core" are required!
      b)  If installing SAS Enterprise Reporter,  SAS/FSP is required. 

9 )  The Review Installation Choices window appears to allow verification
     of the SAS components to be installed.  
     Clicking Next will begin the installation.

10 )  Depending upon the products chosen to be installed, 
     these prompts may appear:
            "Please insert disk labeled: Solutions Disk 1".  
            "Please insert disk labeled: Solutions Disk 2".  
            "Please insert disk labeled: Solutions Disk 4".  
            "Please insert disk labeled: SAS Shared Components". 
            "Please insert disk labeled: SAS/Secure Windows". 
       Insert the disk requested when prompted.  
       There are many files to be copied during this process.

11)  When the installation is complete,  
       the SAS System Setup Complete window appears.  
       Click the Finish button.

12)   SAS Institute has posted patches for SAS 8.2 (called HotFixes) on their website.

To ensure Base SAS functions properly on your system, it is recommended that you:
1. Download the Base SAS Hotfix Bundle for Windows .    Follow these Installation Instructions.
2. Review and download Hotfixes that have been released since the Base SAS Hotfix bundle that are pertinent to your work.

If you installed SAS/STAT,
1. Download the SAS/STAT Hotfix Bundle for Windows.   Follow these Installation instructions.
2. Review and download Hotfixes that have been released since the SAS/STAT Hotfix bundle that are pertinent to your work.

For all other SAS products you have installed (ie Connect, Graph, etc.) 
review and download pertinent Hotfixes for the other SAS  products you use.

To receive notification of newly issued SAS Hotfixes (tsnews-l)

After installing the above hotfixes, to conserve space on your PC, don't forget to remove each of the .exe files from the download (such as 82bx04wn.exe, 82sx01wn.exe).

PC Performance and the SAS System

SAS Manuals and Tutorials:
  1)  SAS Version 8 manuals, called "OnLineDocs",  are available in a 
       2 CD set from online@vcu for $15.  
       See below for recommended installation settings.
       CD #1  "SAS OnLineDoc Version 8" CD contains the SAS manuals 
                     for Version 8 in HTML format.
       CD #2  "What's New in SAS" contains the Changes and Enhancements
                     manuals for Release 8.1 and Release 8.2 in PDF format.      
  2)  SAS Manuals are also on the web in both HTML and PDF format.  
       For off campus access you will be prompted for:
                 login  (last 7 digits of your VCUCard) and 
                 password (last 4 digits of your SSN).
  3)  Purchase printed manuals from  SAS Publications or  call (800) 727-3228.
  4)  SAS OnlineTutor and the associated exercise files are included on 
       your PC installation CD. 
       SAS OnlineTutor is also on the VCU website.

To install the OnLine Doc Version Eight:
   1)  Insert the CD labeled "SAS OnLine Doc Version Eight" into the CD drive.
   2)  If the install does not autostart, do the following:
        a)  Select Start and then Run...
        b)  To start the Setup program type in the Run window:
                 <source_drive>: \Setup.exe
        c)  Example:  If your CD drive is D:  then type:
                 D:\Setup.exe
   3)  Proceed with the installation until the "Select Install Method" window
        appears.   Select: "Run SAS OnLine Doc from the CD-ROM"
   4)  On the "Select Entry Point" window select:
        "View SAS OnLine Doc with Java"

To use "What's New in SAS Release 8.1 and Release 8.2 Online Documentation":
   1)  Insert the CD labeled "What's New in SAS Release 8.1 and 
        Release 8.2 Online Documentation"
into the CD drive.
   2)  Select Start and then Run...
   3)  Select the Browse button.
   4)  In the "Look in:" popdown, select your CD drive.
   5)  In the "Files of type:" popdown, select "All Files".
   6)  Select WhatsNew.pdf and select the Open button.  
        This will launch Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the SAS documentation.
        A Table of Contents is on page 5.
   NOTE: To read or print these PDF format files, 
               Adobe Acrobat Reader must be installed on your machine. 
               A free download is available from the Adobe website.
