SAS for Windows

Virginia Commonwealth University has a site license agreement with SAS Institute of Cary, NC to license SAS for VCU students, faculty and staff for both Administrative Use and Teaching & Research Use.

SAS Installation media for Teaching & Research Use (no charge):
   
1. Download SAS for Windows 9.1.3 to your PC and create the two CD SAS installation set. Then use the CDs to install SAS on your PC.    OR
   
2. Download SAS for Windows 9.1.3 in the computer lab in Cabell Library Room B-8 and create the two CD SAS installation set in the lab.  You must bring two blank CD-R disks.  Then use the CDs to install on your PC.    OR

    3. Bring two blank CD-R disks (minimum speed 16X) to the Technology Services Help Desk in Cabell B-30 or Sanger B1-018k during walk-in hours to obtain in exchange the two CD SAS 9.1.3 installation set.    If no pre-copied stock is on hand at the time of your request, you can leave your contact information and you will be advised when you can return with the two blank CD-R disks to pickup the pre-copied SAS 9.1.3 installation CDs.  Then use the CDs to install on your PC. 

SAS Installation media for Administrative Use:

Note: Teaching and Research Users are licensed for different SAS products than Administrative Users and need different installation media.

  • SAS for Windows licenses are available at no charge to VCU students, faculty, and staff.

  • SAS obtained under this license may only be used for teaching, research or administrative purposes at VCU. 

  • Installation media may be borrowed/copied from any other VCU SAS user. That is, one set of SAS installation media may be used to install SAS for Windows products on multiple PCs on VCU premises, on VCU students/faculty/staff laptops and at VCU students/faculty/staff home. 

  • Each installation of SAS for Windows software MUST be registered. 
    When SAS software is obtained by download or from th eTechnology Services Help Desk you are asked to specify the number of licenses. If additional licenses are installed are installed at a later time, these additional licenses MUST be registered online. Please use the VCU Software License Registration webpage to register additional licenses even though you do not perform an additional download.

  • For working with larger files or cpu intensive programs, SAS is also available on central UNIX servers.

  • Only VCU faculty, staff and students who subscribe to the PCSAS-L LISTSERV (mailing list) receive information about the SETINIT program, notifications of SAS upgrades, renewal times for SAS licenses, SAS training opportunities,  Virginia SAS User's Group meetings, etc.  Those who registered their license on the VCU Software Download Registration webpage or purchased their installation media from online@vcu are automatically added to this list.

    Note:  Be sure to substitute your firstname and lastname in the subscribe statement.

  • SAS for Windows licenses expire each year on June 30, with a 90 day grace period.   For SAS for Windows to continue to operating after that time, a new license code, called an SID file, must be applied.   Registered users will be notified by e-mail to PCSAS-L LISTSERV when a new license code is available.

Restrictions

    The SAS software obtained via the Teaching and Research Use license may be used for VCU teaching and research purposes ONLY.

    When you leave VCU, you MUST remove ALL VCU licensed SAS products from your office, laptop and home PC.

    You may not resell this license or software.

    Any commercial or profit-making use of this software is strictly prohibited.

    You may not reverse assemble, reverse engineer or decompile the Software or otherwise attempt to access the source code.

    The SAS Logo may not be used in SAS applications developed at VCU.

    SAS setinits cannot be be posted on personal or departmental websites.

Obtaining SAS 9.1.3 Installation Media by Download for Teaching and Research Use

SAS installation media is contained on two CDs called Setup Disk and SoftwareDisk1. A CD Image file for each of these SAS installation CDs may be downloaded from the VCU software download site at no charge.

Each downloaded image file can then be used to create one of the two SAS installation CDs. You will need a two blank CD-R or CD-RW disks to create the SAS installation CD set from the downloaded image files. The PC used for this must:

    Have a CD burner

    Have software installed for burning CDs

If you do not have a PC with CD burning capability, you may use the facilities in the computer lab in Cabell Library, Room B-8 (Monroe Park Campus) or Sanger Hall, B3 Lab (MCV campus).

To download the TWO SAS 9.1.3 Installation CD image files for Teaching and Research Use:

    Visit the SAS download link below. Follow the directions to enter your license registration information

    When the list of software products is displayed:, select SAS913Download

    Specify the number of licenses you will be using
    (i.e., the number of PCs on which you will be installing SAS 9.1.3 using this single download).

    Select the RegisterSoftware button.

    On the subsequent page, after reading the instructions, select the link at the bottom to download the two image files (SAS913Win_SetupDisk.ISO and SAS913Win_SoftwareDisk1.ISO) to your PC.

    Through the campus network the download of each CD image may take several minutes to complete. Off campus download time is dependent upon your Internet connection speed.

    Please read the directions on the SAS 9.1.3 Installation Instructions page for additional information about creating the installation CDs from these two image files.

    Note: Only SAS 9.1.3 is available for download.

SAS Products Available for Teaching and Research Use

SAS Products are also available on the App2Go Citrix Server for researchers

VCU researchers can also access SAS via the App2Go Citrix Server
When you use SAS on the App2Go server, it appears to be running on your PC. 
You can open and save files on your PC.

SAS Products Available for Administrative Use

To renew a SAS license, obtain and install a SAS Installation Data (SID) file:    

SAS for Windows licenses expire each year on June 30, with a 90 day grace period through September 28 (to see when your SAS software will expire, you may run PROC SETINIT).  Thus, annual renewal of SAS licenses must be completed by September 28 by applying a license code called an SID File.   The SID file was formerly called a SETINIT.   Failure to do so prior to September 28 will result in SAS for Windows not running on your PC after that date.   Applying the SID file will extend your SAS license through June 30 of the following year, with a 90-day grace period until September 28.

Note: There are different SID files for SAS Version 9.1.3 and SAS Version 8.2 and for Teaching and Research use and Administrative Use. Be sure to download the SID file for the version of SAS you have installed. If you do not know what version of SAS for Windows you are running: Launch SAS for Windows. The Log window contains a NOTE: which displays the release number.
