Mathematica at VCU

VCU has obtained a 30 simultaneous user license for Mathematica from Wolfram Research Inc. Mathematica seamlessly integrates a numeric and symbolic computational engine, graphics system, programming language, documentation system, and advanced connectivity to other applications. Key Elements of Mathematica

Mathematica obtained under this VCU site license may only be used:

  • on campus
  • on university owned or leased PCs
  • by VCU faculty, staff, and students
  • for teaching and research purposes

Under the VCU cross platform license, up to 30 on campus computers can be running Mathematica at any time. License use is controlled by the VCU Mathematica License Manager.
Mathematica versions available under this license are:

  • Mathematica for Windows Me/NT/2000/XP/VISTA
  • Mathematica for Mac X 10.3 or 10.4
  • Mathematica for Linux or Solaris (to request media)

System Requirements

Obtaining Mathematica Installation Media:

  1. Register and download Mathematica for on-campus use:
       For Windows  (version 6.0.3 - both 32-bit and 64-bit - first available 6/20/2008)

    For Macs   (version 6.0.3 - both 32-bit and 64-bit - first available 6/20/2008)

    For Linux  ( version 6.0.3 - both 32-bit and 64-bit - first available 6/20/2008)

  2. When doing so, you are agreeing to abide by the licensing agreement that VCU has with Wolfram Research Inc. This agreement restricts use of the software to on campus only and by VCU students, faculty or staff on university owned computers.
  3. When you register, you will be sent an e-mail message:
    1. Confirming your registration.
    2. Providing a link to a restricted ftp site which allows you to download the installation files.
      For Windows and Linux installs:
After downloading, you will need to write the installation files to a CD.
From this CD, you will install the Mathematica software on your PC.
    3. Including installation instructions and how to access the VCU Mathematica License Manager server.

After installing, to run the Mathematica, the Mathematica License Manager server must be running in order to 'boot up' the software on your PC. If the Mathematica License Manager server goes down, Mathematica will not be available. If you are attempting to startup Mathematica and are unable to do so, report this to the TS HelpDesk at 828-2227.

Remember, download and use of Mathematica at VCU is restricted to on-campus only. It is also illegal to share the installation CDs without first registering for the software.

Student Licenses

Mathematica student licenses are available via the web from Wolfram Research in semester, 12 month and perpetual versions.  The perpetual Student Edition version can also be ordered online at a discount from journeyEd and delivered to the VCU Bookstore with no shipping charges.  Students who have purchased Mathematica for Students can convert their license to the professional version of Mathematica
at a significant discount after graduation.

Faculty/Staff Home Use Licenses

Also included in this contract are 30 " Home Use" licenses for faculty and staff. Home-use licenses are restricted to a desktop computer or laptop owned by the employee. If the computer is a desktop machine, it must be located at the individual's personal residence. Home-use licenses are automatically registered to the individual who requested it and may not be transferred to another individual.

Each individual approved for a home-use license is issued a unique license number and and provided with a single-machine version of the product for the platform requested. Each home-use license is renewed annually in conjunction with the parent license program. Your request will be forwarded to the VCU Site Administrator to verify VCU employment status. Wolfram Research will send your home-use license to you.
