IDL at VCU
VCU has obtained a 25 concurrent
user site license for IDL
(Interactive Data Language)
from RSI.
Funding for this software has been arranged by Technology Services for:
- VCU faculty, staff and students
- For on campus use only
- For teaching or research
- For Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris platforms.
Key Features of IDL
IDL is accessible at VCU by the following methods:
1. On the App2Go Citrix Server for researchers:
VCU researchers can use IDL on the App2Go Citrix Server.
When you use IDL on the App2Go server, it appears to be running on your PC.
You can open and save files on your PC and print on your PC.Five (5) concurrent use licenses of IDL are available for use by VCU researchers on the App2Go Server.
2. By downloading IDL to your Windows PC:
Note: The current VCU download of IDL for Windows , Version 6.4, is supported for Microsoft Windows versions: 32-bit Vista, 32-bit XP and 2000 SP4. To request IDL for other operating systems.
Register and download IDL for Windows
To request installation media for other platforms contact the Technology Services at 828-2227.
To purchase ENVI+IDL Student Edition license. This is a 12-month fully functioning current release of our ENVI+IDL software, available to full-time students enrolled in an accredited, degree granting institution.
3. Request installation media for Mac, Linux or Solaris platforms
Installation Instructions
When you register, an e-mail message with installation and configuration instructions will be sent to your VCU e-mail account. Configuration is required for IDL to obtain a license to run IDL.
Restrictions
IDL software obtained under this license:
- May only be used by current VCU faculty, staff and students
- May only be used on campus
- Is exclusively for academic/research use
- May not be used for commercial gain
- May not be modified
- May only be shared with others at VCU who register a license
- Must be uninstalled when you are no longer affiliated with VCU

Running IDL
Since many users at VCU will be sharing the 25 simultaneous user licenses, please shutdown IDL when you are not using it. The 25 concurrent use licenses are controlled by the VCU IDL License Manager. If you are attempting to startup IDL and are unable to do so, report this to Technology Services HelpDesk at 828-2227.
IDL-L MAILING LIST
VCU faculty, staff and students who are subscribed to the IDL-L LISTSERV
(mailing list) receive notifications of IDL upgrades, etc.Those who registered their license on the VCU Software Download Registration webpage are automatically added to this list. In some departments technical support staff register a block of licenses. If users whose licenses are registered by their technical support staff wish to receive listserv notifications for this product they should subscribe:
