WS_FTP Installation

The following description will walk you through the WS_FTP installation

  • Be sure you do not have WS_FTP running
  • Download the WS_FTP installation file. Be sure to remember where you save it on your PC.
  • Locate and double click the downloaded file.
  • A WS_FTP LE Installation window will popup. Choose Continue to begin the installation.
  • On the next popup window, choose the first radio button, stating you are a student, faculty or staff from an educational institution. Then click Next.
  • Indicate the location and purpose you are using WS_FTP LE. Check at work or school for location and academic for purpose. Then click Next.
  • Choose the Accept license agreement.
  • You may change the destination folder, but usually the default is good. Choose OK to continue.
  • Click OK for the file transfer destination folder.
  • Some files will be copied to your PC.
  • If you have a previous version of WS_FTP, you will be prompted about an INI file. Here you may choose to overwrite your existing profiles. The choice is yours. If you choose not to overwrite the INI file, the new version of WS_FTP will still work.
  • Click OK for the Program Group.
  • You are done!

Connecting to a different host
If you are currently connected to a host, you must close the current session by clicking on the CLOSE CONNECTION button. Once the connection is closed, notice that the CLOSE CONNECTION button changes into an OPEN CONNECTION button. Click on the OPEN CONNECTION button and type in the information for your session. . You can also press on the down triangle next to shortcuts and choose another session profile. To add shortcuts to your computer, choose Edit shortcuts from the CUSTOMIZE menu. Select the NEW button and type in the appropriate information. Press the OKAY button and then press the OKAY button at the next screen.

How do I install files?
Transferring Files from a Host Computer to Your Macintosh Once you are connected to a remote host, the main program window will display.
To transfer a file from a host computer to your Macintosh, click on the filename on the host computer. Then click the GET button. A dialogue box will appear letting you save the file as you normally would save a file on the Macintosh. (You can change the name or location if you want to.) Transferring Files from Your Macintosh to a Host Computer Once you are connected to a remote host, the main program window will display.

To transfer a file from your Macintosh to a host computer, click the PUT button. A dialogue box will appear letting you click on a file on your Macintosh to select it. Then click the OPEN button. Another dialogue box will appear showing you the file name and type (for example, text or binary) as it will appear on the host computer. Then click the OK button.

Does it matter if I transfer a file as binary or ASCII?
Yes. Non-text files such as word-processing, graphic files, sound files, programs and compressed (.zip) files MUST BE transferred as binary. If non-text files are transferred in ASCII format, the resulting file will not be usable. Text-only files should be transferred in ASCII format.

Is it possible to view the contents of a text file from within Fetch?
Yes, click on the text file (usually has a .txt file extension) to select (highlight) it, then choose View File from the REMOTE menu. This procedure is especially helpful for reading remote INDEX files found on many anonymous ftp sites.

How do I access the VCU Anonymous FTP server?
A session profile for VCU Anonymous FTP is in the shortcut list. (The address is ftp.vcu.edu, the user is anonymous, and the password is your VCU login id.)

How can I use FTP to upload/download files between my Cabell or Hibbs account and my PC?
A session profile for both Cabell and Hibbs is listed in the shortcut list. Follow the instructions given previously for transferring files.
