What is Fetch?
Fetch is an FTP (file transfer protocol) software program that allows
you to transfer files between your Macintosh and host computers on campus
(such as for your RAMsites or people.vcu.edu account) or between your Macintosh
and other computers on the Internet.
What are the installation requirements?
You MUST be directly connected to the VCU network via either Ethernet
or Token Ring (it will not work through the current VCU dial-in service
or if you are connected to the campus network through a terminal server).
If you are unsure whether your office computer meets these requirements,
contact your local computer support staff person or contact
Technology Services Help Desk at 828-2227.
Fetch requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or newer, approximately 50 megs of disk storage, and 4 megabytes of RAM.
What is the Installation procedure?
- Double click the Fetch Zip file you have saved from our website to unzip the Fetch installation files.
- Double-click on the Fetch DMG file.
- A Fetch Installer disk image will be created on your desktop.
- Open the Fetch Installer disk image and drag (or copy) the Fetch application into your Applications folder.
- After installation, make sure to eject the Fetch Installer disk image to save disk space.
- Double click on the Fetch icon to start the program.
- Connecting to a Host
When you start Fetch, a session profile is automatically displayed. A session profile stores information about a host computer to which you may connect. This information includes the Internet address of the host computer, the login and password for the computer, etc.
By default, Fetch displays the session profile for the host to which you most recently connected. - Connecting to a different host
If you are currently connected to a host, you must close the current session by clicking on the CLOSE CONNECTION button. Once the connection is closed, notice that the CLOSE CONNECTION button changes into an OPEN CONNECTION button. Click on the OPEN CONNECTION button and type in the information for your session. . You can also press on the down triangle next to shortcuts and choose another session profile. To add shortcuts to your computer, choose Edit shortcuts from the CUSTOMIZE menu. Select the NEW button and type in the appropriate information. Press the OKAY button and then press the OKAY button at the next screen.
How do I transfer files?
Transferring Files from a Host Computer to Your Macintosh Once you are connected to
a remote host, the main program window will display.
To transfer a file from a host computer to your Macintosh, click on the
filename on the host computer. Then click the GET button. A dialogue box
will appear letting you save the file as you normally would save a file
on the Macintosh. (You can change the name or location if you want to.)
Transferring Files from Your Macintosh to a Host Computer Once you are
connected to a remote host, the main program window will display.
To transfer a file from your Macintosh to a host computer, click the PUT button. A dialogue box will appear letting you click on a file on your Macintosh to select it. Then click the OPEN button. Another dialogue box will appear showing you the file name and type (for example, text or binary) as it will appear on the host computer. Then click the OK button.
Does it matter if I transfer a file as binary or ASCII?
Yes. Non-text files such as word-processing, graphic files, sound files,
programs and compressed (.zip) files MUST BE transferred as binary. If
non-text files are transferred in ASCII format, the resulting file will
not be usable. Text-only files should be transferred in ASCII format.
Is it possible to view the contents of a
text file from within Fetch?
Yes, click on the text file (usually has a .txt file extension) to select (highlight)
it, then choose View File from the REMOTE menu. This procedure is especially
helpful for reading remote INDEX files found on many anonymous ftp sites.
