Setting up LDAP Access in Email

Why should I set up LDAP?

Setting up LDAP access in your email client will make it easier to get email addresses for anyone in the VCU directory. Once you have LDAP set up within your email client, you can start typing the name of the person you wish to contact in the To: field of a new email and you will see a list of options that matches whatever you have typed.

Setting up LDAP in Thunderbird:

  1. Select Tools -> Account Settings in the menu.
  2. Select Composition & Addressing on the left side of the Account Settings panel.
Step 2: The Composition & Addressing panel
  3. Under Addressing, click "Use a different LDAP server:" and then click the "Edit Directories" button.
  4. In the LDAP Directory Servers window, click the "Add" button to add a new server.
Step 4: The LDAP Directory Servers window
  5. You will see the Directory Server Properties window below:
Step 5: Adding the information in the Directory Server Properties window
  6. You will need to set the following fields:
    • Name: This can be whatever you'd like; if unsure, VCU Phonebook is a good name.
    • Hostname: phonebook.vcu.edu
    • Port number: 636
    • Make sure "Use secure connection (SSL)" is checked. This should automatically update the port number to 636.
