Getting an IP address automatically on Campus via DHCP (Dynamic Host Config Protocol) for Windows NT

Before you begin, please ensure that you have your original Windows NT 4.0 CD ready and that you are logged in to your local machine with Administrator privileges.

Configuring TCP/IP

  • Begin by opening the Windows NT Control Panel. Click the Start button, choose Settings and then Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the Network icon to configure your network settings. When the Network dialog box appears, click the Protocols tab.
  • By default, NetBEUI Protocol, NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, NWLink NetBIOS and TCP/IP Protocol will normally be installed. The only required protocol for Internet connectivity is TCP/IP Protocol. Remove NetBEUI unless you have a special reason to run this protocol.
  • If TCP/IP Protocol is not installed, click the Add button and select TCP/IP Protocol. Click OK. It may ask you to insert your Windows NT 4.0 CD at this time. Windows will install the necessary files from the CD.
  • Highlight TCP/IP Protocol and click the Properties button.
Make sure that Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server is selected. Click the OK button.
  • You should now be back at the Network Control Panel. Click the OK button and restart Windows NT.

Connecting to the Network/Internet

Once the required network components have been installed and your computer has been restarted, Windows will automatically request network information from the DHCP server. You can now begin using the Internet by starting your browser or e-mail program.
