Getting an IP address automatically on Campus via DHCP (Dynamic Host Config Protocol) for Windows Me
Before you begin
It may require your Windows ME CD.
Installing TCP/IP
- Begin by opening the Windows Control Panel. (Click the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel.)
- Double-click on the icon labeled Network to configure your network settings.
- Under the Configuration tab, you should have TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks and your Ethernet card installed. If you have a modem, you will have Dial-Up Adapter and another copy of TCP/IP installed as well.
- To install TCP/IP, click on Add, select Protocol. Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers list, and double click on TCP/IP.
- Similarly, to install Client for Microsoft Networks, click on Add, select Client. Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers list, and double click on Client for Microsoft Networks.
Configuring TCP/IP
- In the Network Control Panel, highlight the component labelled TCP/IP. If you have a second network adapter (i.e. Dial-Up Adapter), highlight the copy of TCP/IP bound to your Ethernet card.
- Click the Properties button and then click on the IP Address tab.
- Ensure the option Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.
- Click on the DNS Configuration tab and ensure that it is Disabled.
- Click on the Gateway tab and remove any entries.
- Click on the WINS Configuration tab and ensure Use DHCP for WINS Resolution is selected.
- Click OK to save any changes.
- You should now be back in the Network Control Panel. Click OK and Windows will begin copying any required files. Once Windows has finished copying files, you will need to restart your computer.
Connecting to the Network/Internet
Once the required network components have been installed and your computer
has been restarted, Windows will automatically request network information
from the DHCP server. You can now begin using the Internet by starting
your browser and e-mail program.
