Getting an IP address automatically on Campus via DHCP (Dynamic Host Config Protocol) for Windows 9x

Before you begin, please have your original Windows 95/98 CD or diskettes ready.

Installing TCP/IP

  • Begin by opening the Windows 95/98 Control Panel. Click the Start button, select Settings and then Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the icon labeled Network to configure your network settings.
  • Under the Configuration tab, if you have the components labelled TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks already installed, skip ahead to the Configuring TCP/IP section.
  • To install TCP/IP, click the Add button. Select Protocol and click the Add button. Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft. Under Network Protocols, select TCP/IP. Click OK to continue. Windows should now return you to the Network Control Panel.
  • To install Client for Microsoft Networks, click the Add button. Select Client and click the Add button.
  • Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft. Under Network Clients, select Client for Microsoft Networks. Click OK to continue. Windows should now return you to the Network Control Panel.

Configuring TCP/IP

  • In the Network Control Panel, highlight the component labelled TCP/IP. If you have a second network adapter (i.e. Dial-Up Adapter), highlight the copy of TCP/IP bound to your Ethernet card.
  • Click on Properties and then click on the IP Address tab.
  • Ensure the option Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.
  • Click on the DNS Configuration tab and ensure that it is Disabled.
  • Click on the Gateway tab and remove any entries.
  • Click on the WINS Configuration tab and ensure the Use DHCP for WINS Resolution to selected.
  • Click OK to save any changes.
  • You should now be back in the Network Control Panel. Click OK and Windows will begin copying any required files. Once Windows has finished copying files, you will need to restart your computer.

Connecting to the Network/Internet

  • Once the required network components have been installed and your computer has been restarted, Windows will automatically request network information from the DHCP server. You can now begin using the Internet by starting your browser and e-mail program.
