Getting an IP address automatically on Campus via DHCP (Dynamic Host Config Protocol) for Windows 2000 Proffessional

Before you begin, you need to be logged onto the local machine with administration privileges. It may require your Windows 2000 CD.

Make a Networking Connection

  • Begin by opening the Windows 2000 Control Panel. (Click the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the icon labeled Network and Dial-Up Connections to configure your network settings.
  • Double-click on the Make New Connection Icon and click Next.
  • Select the Dial Up to the Internet option, and click Next.
  • Select I want to set up my Internet connection manually and click Next.
  • Select I connect through a Local Area Network (LAN) and click Next.
  • Use the default option, Automatic Discovery of Proxy Server and click Next.
  • Choose No, do not set up an Internet Mail Account, click Next, then Finish.

Configuring the Connection

  • Adding Network Components

You need to have both Client For Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) installed for a network connection to work.

Installing Client For Microsoft Networks

  • Open Start | Settings | Control Panel | Network and Dial-Up Connections | Select the Connection icon that you just created.
  • If you have opened the Networking Control Panel before, you can find it in Start | Settings | Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  • Right Click on the Connection icon you just created and select Properties from the drop down menu.
  • Click on Install.
  • Select Client then click on Add.
  • Select Client for Microsoft Networks and click OK. It should be added to the list. Ensure that there is a check in the box to the left of the entry on the Properties windows to ensure that this component is being used by this connection.

Installing Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

This should have been added when installing Client for Microsoft Networks above, but if it is not…

  • Click on Install in the Properties windows.
  • Select Protocol and click on Add.
  • Select TCP/IP and click OK.
  • Ensure that the box is checked.
  • Press OK and restart your computer.

Configuring Network Components

  • Single click on the Local Area Connection icon you created above, and select Properties from the drop down menu that appears.
  • In the Connect Using box, your Ethernet card should be listed.
  • In the box titled Components Checked are used by this Connection, you should see Client For Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) listed with check marks in the boxes to the left.
  • Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to highlight it, and click on Properties and set both IP Address and DNS to be obtained automatically.
  • Close the Properties window, and the Control Panel and restart you computer.

Connecting to the Network/Internet

Once the required network components have been installed and your computer has been restarted, Windows will automatically request network information from the DHCP server. You can now begin using the Internet by starting your browser or e-mail program.
