Blackboard Course

How do I login to Blackboard?

To login to Blackboard go to http://blackboard.vcu.edu/. Click the Login icon at the top of the page. Enter your user eID and password. If you don't know your eID and password, go to the eID Management web page.

What is my Blackboard Username and Password?

Your Blackboard username and password is your eID and password, the same combination used to access your VCU email account. To find your eID, go to VCU eID Finder.

If you don’t remember your password, contact the VCU Help Desk at 828-2227 or go to one of the following locations and bring your VCU Card:

  • Monroe Park Campus - Help Desk, Cabell Library, room B-9
  • Medical Campus - Help Desk, Sanger Hall, room B1-018

How do I change my Blackboard password?

Use the VCU eID finder to search for your eID and to reset a password.

Why is my course not listed in Blackboard?

A course will not appear in Blackboard if the instructor has chosen not to use the Blackboard Course Management System. Check with the instructor to see if the course was created in Blackboard.

A course will not appear in Blackboard until the instructor makes the course available to the students. Check with your instructor to see if the course was made available.

If you just registered for the course, you will receive access to a Blackboard course 24 to 48 hours after the time you register for the course.

You may not be "officially" enrolled in the course. If you receive an override to get into the course, the override may not have been turned in. Login to eServices@VCU to confirm the course appears on your Class Schedule.

How do I check my grades in Blackboard?

There are two options available to view grades:

  • Login to Blackboard and go to Tools and click View Grades and select the course.
  • Login to Blackboard, open the course, click Tools or Course Tools and open My Grades.

If your grades are not displayed, check with the instructor to see if the grades were posted in Blackboard.

How do I open a PowerPoint Slide Show after the January 2005 Blackboard System Upgrade?

Some Blackboard users have a problem opening a PowerPoint slide show after the January 14, 2005 system upgrade. The solution to the problem is to Update Microsoft Office. To Update Microsoft Office, do the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the top menu bar and click on Tools > Windows Update.
  3. Click on Office Family located on the menu bar just below Windows Update at the top of the screen.
  4. Go to top/center blue box labeled Office Update and click Check for Updates.
  5. Follow the installation instructions.

Note: If you installed the Windows Service Pack 2 Update on your computer, you may need to do a right mouse to allow for pop ups to continue the installation.

Why am I not getting class emails from my instructor?

In order to receive email messages from your instructor, you must use your VCU Email account. Current and incoming students are automatically assigned an eID that provides access to their VCU Email account. Use the eID finder to search for your eID or to reset a password. If you don't know your password, stop by the Help Desk in Sanger Hall B1-018 or Cabell B-9 or call 828-2227. Please bring your VCU Card.

In the past, some students were forwarding their VCU Email account to another email. Students are no longer able to forwarded their VCU Email to another account. Students must access their VCU Email account to receive email generated through the Blackboard Learning System.

Why didn't my professor get my assignment when I uploaded it to Blackboard?

Not all professors use the Digital Drop Box in Blackboard. Check with your professor to see how he or she wishes to receive the assignment.

 

Blackboard Content System

What is the Blackboard Content System?

The Blackboard Content Management System (CMS) is a file storage system within Blackboard. If you have used VCU Files in the past, it is very similar. CMS provides server space to store and retrieve files from any computer connected to the Internet. CMS provides the ability to share files and to link from a CMS file to a Blackboard course. CMS has an ePortfolio component that is now available. To find out more about the Blackboard Content System, go to http://blackboard.vcu.edu and login to Blackboard. Click on the Content System tab, click on Tools, and then click on Help or click on CMS Manual in Blackboard Help.

How do I share a Content System file with a person at VCU?

Files stored on the Content System may be share with people within and outside the VCU Community. File permissions must be set to share a file, and "Passes" must be given to share a file outside the VCU Community. How do I upload multiple files in CMS using Web Folder?

Web Folder is used to upload multiple files and folders from your desktop to the Content System or vice versa. Web Folder is a Web application that uses WebDAV technology, Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning, an IETF standard. Web Folder functions as an interface between your desktop operating system and the Blackboard Content System. Blackboard Help

How do I access the Blackboard Student Manual?

Visit the VCU Blackboard Help to view the help information on the VCU Blackboard Learning Management System.

A generic Blackboard Student Manual is provided by Blackboard.com within each course. Open the course in Blackboard, click Tools and select Student Manual to open the document. It may take a few minutes for the large .pdf document to appear on your screen. The content and functionality may vary based on the modifications made to the product at VCU. Instructors may modify, remove or add buttons to a course; therefore, it may change the appearance and functionality of the course.

How do I get help with a Blackboard problem?

If you need help using Blackboard, ask your instructor to give an overview of the course functionality and use of materials in Blackboard. If you need help with a specific Blackboard feature, click on Blackboard Help or refer to the Blackboard Student Manual under the course Tools button.
