Project Director: Robert C. Merrell, M.D.

MITAC is a NASA Commercial Space Center located within the Department of Surgery. MITAC's mission is to manage medicine at a distance by applying and integrating sensors, telecommunications systems, effectors and process simulations. MITAC explores, adapts and validates technology through testbeds such as those in Ecuador. MITAC develops partnerships with industry, academia, foundations and other government agencies to investigate applications of information technology in health care, including robotics in surgery. MITAC has been an early adopter of Internet as a means of communications to support telemedicine.
